November 2012 Treating Autism Seminars

Dear colleagues, students and friends,
I am delighted to offer two autism spectrum disorders and music therapy seminars at the Surry Music Therapy Center in November of 2012. Attached you will find a flyer that contains all the information regarding dates, seminar content and other important information. Please plan to come and pass the information on to others you know who might be interested.Autism can be broadly defined as a disability that significantly affects one’s communicative, interpersonal, behavioral and social functioning. Music therapy is a developmental, educational, clinical and behavioral treatment modality that can often stimulate, motivate and integrate autistic client’s strengths and potentials.

Music therapy supports the goals and objectives of the treatment team, most notably in the areas of speech, physical, occupational and developmental therapies as well educational, psychological and social / emotional goals. Music therapy is uniquely effective in working with autistic clients who are non – verbal or profoundly communicatively and / or behaviorally delayed.

Music as therapy offers clients energy, experience, and an emotional release in a non – threatening engaging and enriching interplay between client and therapist. The music therapist sensitively, yet objectively, opens channels of communication and contact as he or she brings out the unique strengths and potential of individual clients.

Music therapy is a treatment approach that will touch many clients with autism when other modalities might not be as effective.
